Course Reviews

Matt Fitzpatrick (US Open Champion 2022)

"I have always enjoyed playing golf at Wallasey. It is especially important to me as I played my last ever amateur event at Wallasey in June 2014, finishing 3rd in the Frank Stableford Open. It would have been great to go out on a win before I flew out to Pinehurst to play in the US Open the following week.

As an elite amateur it is rare to play a scratch Stableford event and that in itself adds extra interest.  I also think it was the only time that my brother and I played in the same scratch event.

The course is without doubt one of the best courses within the UK. The view from the 4th tee is spectacular with Liverpool Bay immediately to the right. The final 3 holes are very demanding and therefore even if you have a good scorecard going it is difficult to protect it over the finishing holes. The 16th is a very tough par 3 especially if played into a reasonably strong wind.

The staff and members were very welcoming and I really do hope to find time to play when I am next in the UK."

Paul Waring (European Tour Member 2008 - Present and Wirral Resident)

"Over the years I have always enjoyed playing Wallasey. It is one of the only courses on the Wirral to offer sea views and has always been in great condition.

With the recent changes it is now truly spectacular. More holes offer that special view of the water and the new grass paths create real visual drama as they meander through the dunes.

The removal of non-native trees, and the reintroduction of native grasses onto the newly re-instated dunes, really adds to this visual as well as having a very positive impact on the playability of some holes.

The most impressive thing of all is that there have been no extra materials used, only reconfigured from what was already there.

It is a real triumph for everybody involved, I can't wait to play it."

Michael Whitehead (Author of "The Golf Lovers Guide to England")

"The course at Wallasey is everything you could wish for in a true links experience. Rolling rugged sand dunes hug an awe-inspiring coastline, thin fairways towards raised greens, elevated tees and blind shots aplenty."

Bernard Darwin ("Historic Golf Courses of the British Isles" 1911)

"I do not think I have ever seen a course on which the contours of the hills and valleys were so infinitely picturesque. We shall have found the golf infinitely pleasant and exhilarating."

Donald Steel ("Classic Links of Great Britain and Ireland")

"...it has mighty sandhills that are fascinating, picturesque and exciting, lending a thrill to the golf on some holes that it would be difficult to better"
